Finding my sewing self again

Hello sewing friends. I hope you've had a good summer. We have had one of the best summers for many a year; the kids are at that age where they can be a real joy, and need less constant supervision.

We've had a wedding to attend, met with many old friends, swam in the sea almost daily, been on a camping trip, holidayed in a castle, and generally had a fabulous time.  But in all the excitement I lost my sew!

I did make a few things:

This dress was run up quickly as a birthday present. It went down well, but I did not feel the love - it was more of a chore.

I have also made shorts for my little girl, which I love, but they remain unfinished despite only having the elastic to go. There are other UFOs too: a top, a blouse and a dress! It's so unlike me, and I don't like this lacklustre feeling. With each project there has been a mistake, or a few, as I'm too tired to sew properly, and a lack of inspiration has seen all these languish un-sewn.

Luckily, I have lovely Instagram friends who have given me advice and support. I feel so buoyed by others' confidence. I am inspired to try the re-fashioners challenge with a £3 pair of jeans, so if it goes wrong like those other projects I haven't lost much. Will report back...

  1. I have been feeling a bit tired and not sewing much this summer as well - so much else going on that even when I have had the time I just haven't had the inclination. But it is meant to be something we do for fun, so take a break, enjoy the time with your family and one day you will wake up and feel ready and excited to sew again (that is my plan anyway!)

    1. Thanks Louise, I am accepting that I am too busy to do much at the moment. It would be lovely to have lots of energy again! One day I guess.

  2. Getting back into the swing of things after exciting holidays takes time - your brain needs to readjust. Sewing is like playing the piano - if you don't practice, after a few weeks it becomes difficult. Plus you probably also got tired with looking after your family - so just ease back in with a simple project you actually want to do. The feeling will pass with time. I went through a lacklustre patch and sewing was not much fun, mistakes made etc - but at least I kept in practice. I'm coming through the patch now, and you will too.

    1. I am almost done on my refashioning project. It has been hard finding the time and inclination. But it will be fun to wear when it's done.

  3. P.S. You may be an introvert, like me. Exciting times may drain you - you need a quiet space perhaps for a while to recharge.

  4. Louise, glad to hear you had a great summer. Sometimes we just need a break from sewing or whatever it is. I've felt that lately as other things like knitting has been calling to me. I pick up this and that to sew, a little at a time. I suppose when I was really enthused I would rush through the sewing as it was so much fun. Now I slow down and it's getting me there. Perhaps I need some new stash! Oh, that's it! ;-)

  6. Your summer sounds delicious! Like you I also didn't get my sew-on this summer either. Now the nights are beginning to draw in (already!!) maybe we can get back our sew-jo!

  7. Maybe the lack of sewing energy was just a symptom of there being more fun things going on elsewhere during your holiday, and now that everyone is back to school you'll be able to get back to sewing. I hope your jeans refashion is going well!

  8. For almost 6 months because I was so very busy I lost my sewing energy. I always try to sew an old stand by that boosts me energy.

  9. It sounds like you've been having a wonderful summer! Sometimes there's no motivation to sew and if you're fine with that it's all good but it's when you want to sew but can't find the energy that it can be so frustrating. I hope you get back into the swing of it soon. I'm looking forward to seeing your jeans refashion!
